ASDS Patient Safety Campaign Featured on CNN

“Some doctors are concerned that while these high-tech devices can produce amazing results, in the wrong hands, the outcome can be horrifying.” - Laser Surgery in Wrong Hands Can Be Dangerous, CNN.

The ASDS has been working to educate the media and the public about the issue of non-physician practice of medicine – especially the dangers of laser treatments by unqualified individuals who are not under the direct supervision of a physician. Our media efforts bore fruit in a recent collaboration with CNN on a segment highlighting the need for consumers to have cosmetic lasers procedures performed only by qualified practitioners. The producer turned to ASDS because he felt that the ASDS and its members were the leaders and experts in patient safety

On Monday, September 24th, CNN featured a segment titled “Laser Surgery in Wrong Hands Can Be Dangerous” with ASDS President Dr. Alastair Carruthers, Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi and Dr. Tanzi’s patient who had been severely injured by a laser procedure in a spa. This segment was the most popular viewed segment on the CNN Web site as announced by an anchor at noon. It was aired multiple times on CNN and also on local television in Seattle, Cleveland and San Diego.

More than 3 million Americans viewed the segment when it aired and countless others have seen the video and read the article on the CNN Web site. The article also linked to the ASDS Web site article “Do’s and Don’ts When Considering Cosmetic Procedures in a Salon or Spa”.
